Islam

Spain’s Muslim community has approximately 375, 000 followers. Islam in Spain is made up of "naturalised Muslims" and immigrants. The "naturalised Muslims" or followers with Spanish citizenship are either people originating from predominantly Muslim countries, who now live in Spain and have acquired Spanish citizenship (Moroccans, Syrians, Jordanians, Iranians or Lebanese) or Spaniards who have converted to Islam. The increase, over the last decades, in immigration from countries which are predominantly of the Muslim religion (Morocco, Pakistan, Algeria, and Senegal) has brought about an increase in the number of followers on Spanish territory. Yet, the size of the Muslim community in Spain is not as numerically significant compared to the Muslim communities of other European countries.
