According to the Marriage Act, a registered religious organization has the right to perform legal marriages. More than 40 religious organizations have this status. The alternative to religious wedding is civil wedding. According to the present legislation marriage is possible only between men and women.

The law regarding same-sex partners (the Civil Union Law) came into force in March 2002. Under this legislation, the same rights and obligations as spouses, with certain exceptions, are conferred to those registering their same-sex union. However, the pair relationship is a legal institution of a different nature from matrimony.
