Geographical distribution

Religious geography

While the geographical distribution of religious belonging in Norway is not marked by sharp contrasts between different regions, some patterns stand out in particular. Notably, among the population in Oslo, approximately 20% belong to a faith community outside the Church of Norway, well above the national average of 15%. The majority of these members belong to Islamic faith communities. Overall, the membership in faith communities outside the Church of Norway is slightly more common in the South-Eastern parts of the country, whereas all regions North of Bergen are slightly or well below the national average.

These slight differences in geographical distribution can largely be attributed to the relatively higher proportion of immigrants in Oslo compared to the rest of the country, and the strong position of several Christian denominations outside the Church of Norway in the Southern parts of the country.
