Enseignement confessionnel
Both the Protestant and Catholic churches own and manage primary and second level schools, with state support, which most of their members attend. The minority of schools which are state owned and managed are almost entirely Catholic in pupil composition and are therefore indistinguishable in most ways from Catholic schools.
The Constitutional position on Denominational Schools is found in article 44.2.4 :
‘Legislation providing State aid for schools shall not discriminate between schools under the management of different religious denominations, nor be such as to affect prejudicially the right of any child to attend a school receiving public money without attending religious instruction at that school’.
