Religious belonging has somewhat declined in the observed period. This is particularly visible through the rise of non-believers. In general, when comparing the census and the EVS data, the sociological approach reveals a somewhat higher number of those who do not belong, as well as a lower number of religious minorities. This can be an indication that people belonging to religious minorities will tend to declare themselves non-believers rather than revealing their minority status.
Contrary to religious belonging, religious self-indication proved stable in the observed period. Independently of the meaning of religiosity for each person, religious self-identification is very spread in Croatia.
Belief is very common in Croatia, as 87% of population declared believing in God in 2008. Beliefs in other religious truths (sin, life after death, paradise, and hell) are present to a lesser extent. Nevertheless, it should be noted that beliefs decreased between 1999 and 2008.
Trust in Church has also somewhat declined from 1999 to 2008, though the majority of the population keeps trust (53%). The number of those without trust was on rise, the Church remaining however (along with the educational system) the most trustworthy institution ; this should be viewed in the light of the generally very low trust in institution found in Croatia.
