Statistics on religious affiliation are generally obtained by the Federal Statistics Bureau (Statistisches Bundesamt). For the major religious denominations, these statistics rely upon self-reported membership files of the Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD) and the Deutsche Bischofskonferenz (DBK). Public census data give the most accurate indications of religious affiliation.
