Religion and higher education

In 2015, the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus (TSCC) was founded by the late Archbishop Chrysostomos II, under the Private Institutions of Higher Education legislation. The four-year undergraduate program in Theology was accredited by the Cyprus Council of Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KYSATS) in 2017. The Church of Cyprus’s long-awaited wish was thus fulfilled. The undergraduate theological degree is acknowledged and deemed comparable to other university programs offered by private and governmental institutions. In addition, from 2019, the TSCC offered its first Master’s program, which was approved by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education(CYQAA).

In the recent years, the Church of Cyprus’s Theological School has garnered significant attention, primarily due to its accredited degree. As a result, the Church has announced that the seminary of “Apostolos Varnavas” is closing. Only a handful of students remain at the seminary, all are expected to graduate soon. The building that accommodated the seminary of “Apostolos Varnavas” was given to the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts by the Kykkos Monastery (see the announcement).
