The two volumes of Religion and Welfare in Europe together examine the function of majority churches as agents of social welfare in eight European societies: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, England, France, Italy and Greece. Volume I, Religion and Welfare in Europe: Configuring the Connections , was published in 2010. Volume II explores the connections between religion and welfare from three perspectives: sociology, gender and theology. The authors examine secularisation, the gendered nature of social care, and the predomination of women in both religion and welfare service delivery. They also explore how religious belief affects construction of welfare systems.

The most recent wave of the BSA was released in February 2011, available on line.

This is the gold-standard UK longitudinal study encompassing and extending massively the British Household Panel Study, which ran from 1991 to 2008. The first wave of Understanding Society was released in December 2010, available on line. There is an associated website at http://www.understandingsociety.org.uk/

This survey is sponsored by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and asks an unusually large sample their leisure and cultural pursuits. It also asks questions about friendships, political participation, and volunteering, and religious affiliation and practice variables are also compiled. Released 31 March 2011, available on line.

Funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and led by Anthony Heath, Steve Fisher, David Sanders and Maria Sobolewska at the Universities of Oxford, Manchester and Essex, this is the most comprehensive study of ethnic minorities in Britain since PSI's Fourth National Survey in 1994, and includes a number of measures concerning religion. Released March 2011, available on line.

This was made available in August 2010 for wider usage, encompassing a number of survey datasets relating to the May 2010 General Election. The BES has covered every general election, and thus gauged the political choices and attitudes of nationally-representative samples of the British electorate, since 1964. More information on both the current and previous studies is available on line.

The Integrated Household Survey (IHS) is a composite survey, collected since 2008, of core questions included on other survey vehicles. In 2009 the core questions were introduced to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and Annual Population Survey (APS), as well as the Life Opportunities Survey. Together an annual sample size of 450,000 is achieved, allowing good-quality information to be produced for the local authority level and Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS) level 3, meeting a demand for locally-specific data.
Regarding religion, LFS respondents have, since 2004, been asked, ‘What is your religion even if you are not currently practicing?' The answers are coded as Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, any other religion, and no religion at all. It is asked of proxies as well as respondents in person.
The LFS/APS/IHS data will allow collection of data on religion over time at the level of local authorities. Currently, microdata are available for downloading and online analysis from the Economic and Social Data Service. Some headline data from the 2009-2010 survey are available here from National Statistics.
